Gerald of Wales. Never heard of him? Don’t worry, neither had I until I had to read him for a medieval history paper. His works are full of weird and wonderful tales about the inhabitants of Ireland, particularly those creatures who are neither fully human nor fully animal, with the odd bit of bestiality. Whilst enjoyable to read as folk tales, from a political perspective his writings were highly inflammatory and are the source of many racist stereotypes regarding the Irish. If you wish to learn more about this medieval writer, I recommend the relevant In Our Time.
